5 Places to Enjoy the Outdoors in Mesa

Mesa, Arizona, is full of culture, entertainment, and many outdoor exploration opportunities. These are some of the best places to enjoy the local outdoors in the area.

  1. Saguaro Lake Ranch Stable

This scenic horseback riding experience is the perfect way to explore the local Mesa outdoors. The guided trail takes you to some of the best views in the area including Saguaro Lake, Salt River, and the Bulldog Cliffs. The ranch sits on historic desert land, giving you plenty of opportunities for breathtaking photographs with desert and mountain backdrops. There are seven different trails to choose from, each of which takes you along a unique path with different elevations and sightseeing opportunities.

  1. Desert Belle Cruises

Desert Belle is a 145 passenger cruise boat that takes you on a guided 90-minute tour of Saguaro Lake. Along the cruise, you will see desert canyons, wildlife, and the geographical formations of the desert landscape. The air-conditioned cruise boat is the perfect way to sightsee the beautiful scenery of Mesa without braving the Arizona heat. There are also themed cruises available including narration cruises, wine tours, and music tours. The cruise ship also has two restrooms available and an on-site snack bar.

  1. Salt River Tubing

If you are looking for a more relaxing experience to explore the Mesa outdoors, Salt River tubing is the answer. Rent a tube and float down the beautiful Salt River, floating by the Tonto National Forest, Coon Bluff, and Phon D Sutton. Float times vary between one and four hours long with multiple drop off and pick up points along the route. There are special tubing themed events including the upcoming Rocking Rodeo Roundup and the Salt River Pirates event. Salt River Tubing is also a great activity for large groups.

  1. Park of the Canals

Arizona is a vibrant historical area that is home to 22 Native American tribes. The 30-acre Park of the Canals is the historical location of the Hohokam Indian canal systems from 700 B.C. In 1989, the park underwent renovations to create an outdoor space that paid tribute to its important historical location while giving locals a nice outdoor place to experience. This free park includes cactuses, various desert vegetation, and a desert botanical garden. Children will also enjoy the interactive playground area.

  1. Downtown Gilbert

Downtown Gilbert is just outside of Mesa and is a wonderful place to visit for shopping, dining, or just taking a stroll through the small town feel of the city. The area often hosts live music nights and special events on the streets. The main street area is home to many local small businesses, giving you a unique inventory of items to purchase. There are also many food choices with exceptional ratings and delectable cuisines. Many visitors also enjoy the small feel of the hometown theater.
