DIY Ways to Fix a Dent in a Car

No matter how far away you park at the store, your car is bound to suffer a few dings on occasion. When you’re in need, here’s how to fix a small dent in a car:

  • Plunger – This method can be carried out with a car dent plunger, but if you’re looking to spend a little less, a new bathroom plunger will do just fine. You can even pick one up at a local Tempe dollar store for an ultra-cheap solution! Simply create suction around the dent with the plunger, then push in and out in a plunging motion to try popping the dent out.
  • Hammer or Mallet – This will only work if the dent is on an area where you can reach around to the other side of it, like on the outside of a wheel well. Use your tool on the opposite side of the dent and lightly knock the area back into place until it’s level with the rest of your exterior again. Tip: Protect the side you’re hammering at with a towel to prevent more damage.
  • Dent puller – This method is best reserved for seasoned DIYers. It involves drilling a hole in the dent, lacing wire through, and pulling the dent back out to surface level. Then, you’ll need to patch up the hole, sand it down, and apply a fresh coat of paint. You can consult local dealerships and service centers to inquire about ordering the right paint color from the OEM of your vehicle.

How to Fix Scratches On a Car

Need to fix scratches on a car after a minor accident? Minor scratches that haven’t gone beyond the surface level of your paint can be fixed with one of several methods:

  • Sandpaper – Shallow scratches are often easily removed with 2,000-grit wet sandpaper. Gently rub at the scratch until it reaches a point where it is nearly invisible. Then, apply a rubbing compound to get it shining like the rest of the paint.
  • Candle wax – This is merely a temporary solution until you can get to a detail shop; clean the area with the scratch, then gently rub a bit of candle wax over the scratch to seal the area temporarily.
  • Superglue – Just like above, superglue should only be regarded as a temporary fix. Use it to seal the scratch and help it blend in with the rest of your paint until you’re able to get a permanent fix.
