Coupe vs. Sedan: What's the Difference?

New Coupes and Sedans at Dealership

What is the difference between a coupe and sedan? Many Phoenix drivers believe the answer comes down simply to doors: coupes have two doors and sedans have four doors. Even though this is one difference, it’s not all of them. There are several factors differentiating coupe vs. sedan. Difference Between Coupe and Sedan

The difference between a coupe and sedan comes down to a few distinct differences in vehicle styles:

  • Door Count: Of course, the most obvious difference between a sedan vs. coupe is the doors. Coupes generally come with two doors and sedans have four doors.
  • Exterior Style: Not including the door counts, there are other exterior cues that denote a sedan vs. coupe. Coupes are shorter in length, making the sporty design of longer doors and longer rear windows possible. However, sedans signify luxury, so the shorter doors give the feeling of more elegance and refinement.
  • Performance: Due to smaller size and weight, the coupe is designed to give a sportier performance. To keep up, sedans compensate for their additional weight with more engine options and suspension upgrades.
  • Interior Size: Sedans are usually roomier than coupes, offering seating for up to five while still maintaining plenty of head and leg room, as opposed to coupes. Space for rear passengers in coupes is limited and can usually only accommodate two people.
  • Cargo Space: Since sedans are longer by design they offer more cargo space. If cargo space is a necessity, a coupe may not be the vehicle for your Tempe commutes.

Sedan vs. Coupe: Which is for Me?

When deciding between a coupe vs. sedan, who’s going to be traveling around Glendale with you? If you have a large family or frequent passengers and need a large amount of cargo space, a sedan would be the way to go. If space isn’t a big concern and you prefer a higher performance with sporty handling, a coupe could be the car for you.
